The medal is a copy of the Royal Danish Geographical Society's Galathea Medal, which was introduced on 28 April 1916. The medal was executed by August Thomsens Etablissement, royal jewellers. The medal depicts the Danish corvette 'Galathea', which in 1845 led the Galathea 1 Expedition on a 26-month journey around the world.

The medal is a copy of a medal issued on 26 May 1739 in connection with the ceremonious opening of the Danish Navy's first dry dock.
The coin set unfolds like a picture book, from the stag on the front cover to the medal's happy little beetle with antlers and a crown. The motifs are inspired by animals of the forest and drawn in an imaginative style by the illustrator Cato Thau-Jensen.
